Nevada Big Business Tax Whining
April 21, 2011
Big business in Nevada pay little or nothing, think mining at zero or at
worst a half a percent and gaming which pays the lowest rates in the world.
And how about those "big-box" stores which also pay nothing? Assemblywoman
Peggy Pierce has introduced legislation, AB
336 which would create a corporate income tax on businesses making more
than $500,000 a year.
Fair, one might say.
Well, Wal-Mart doesn't see it
that way and warns they would have to reduce employee inventory and purchase
price. In other words, layoffs and reduced salaries. Interestingly, Wal-Mart
charges Nevadans the same prices for their stuff as they do in other states
where they are taxed so how is it their Nevada operations would be
critically affected? You would, think the extra profits they earn here would
at least go to a better wages or benefits. Nope. They go to lobbyists and
lawyers to make public threats to their employees and all Nevadans at the
legislature.
If all this weren't annoying
enough, the Nevada Tax Payers Association is also against the bill but then
you have to remember there is are Barrick Gold Mine and Wal-Mart
representatives on their board.
