Fewer Benefits Part of the State
Employee Tax
May 9, 2011
Governor Sandoval and his minions are proposing to give state employees
fewer benefits in AB
560 which
proposes to reduce vacation and sick leave days for state employees. This
proposal is in addition to an across-the-board 5 percent pay cut and
maintaining the pay freezes of the past few years. This doesn’t even count
the significant reduction in health benefits and an increase in retirement
contributions to just over 12 percent which start July 1st.
Apparently, the “No new taxes” mantra does
not apply to state employees who are expected to pay for the services of
all Nevadans with their salaries. This is the State Employee Tax and it is
a tax others would be unwilling to accept, especially those proposing the
law.
Why does the Governor and many legislators
expect state employees to subsidize the state? Aren’t subsidies welfare?
Aren’t they a “bad thing”? They do it because they know they can… state
employees have no collective bargaining and have to take what they get.
How about a tax on Republicans or to be
fair, a tax on politicians and their families? Not fair? Too bad!
