An Expensive and Secret Tea Party Convention

January 11, 2010

The national Tea Party Convention will be held February 4-6, 2010 at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN. Here are a few comments about this “grass roots” effort:

Tea party convention organizers are blocking the press except for a few hand picked reporters who will undoubtedly report only favorable things and include a few pictures too. Hopefully not photo-shopped ones as they did for the Washington, DC rally showing more people than there were.

The keynote speaker will be Sarah Palin who is reportedly getting a $100,000 for her speech. Frankly a dollar is too much for lies and conspiracy theories which are easily read about for free on the Internet. However the tea party organizers think she is worth it. Hopefully there is a no-show penalty since Palin is not very reliable but then $100,000 are lots of reasons to help with her determination to follow-through.

Palin will not give any interviews. This is expected since they are not her strong suit especially when people ask her about subjects she should be able to answer coherently and accurately. This is her preemptive strike against those who seek to add more lies to the many she has already said. Drat... foiled again!

Most disturbingly is the convention price is $ 549 for the whole experience or just $ 349 to see and hear the speakers at the banquet. This seems a radical departure from the “grass roots” claim by the organizers of the movement. Grass roots people usually don't have an extra $549 lying around. They are supposed to be “regular folk” who are barely getting by because of the taxes and mismanagement of government. Despite these financial barriers the convention has sold out.

The tea party movement will be clearly exposed for its true character... a fake grass roots movement funded by the wealthy for themselves and the politicians they support, mainly Republicans. The movement has been co-opted and devalued for financial and political gain.

And who gets to challenge the "challenge movement"? Here is the answer on the party website:

*Please be aware that any disruptive behavior will result in the immediate removal from the convention site and all ticket purchases will be forfeited.  There will be no exceptions!

Now, you can't even protest the National Tea Party itself. Sounds un-American and facist.
