We
Need an Exit Plan for Afghanistan – Now!
September 11, 2009
We
need to clearly define goals in the Afghanistan War and create a plan to
meet them. While we delay, our soldiers are dying. They deserve to know what
kind of war they are fighting as do the rest of us.
It is
not possible to win militarily, it is a situation the Afghans must solve or
deal with. It is an unwinnable political conflict and we cannot participate
in for much longer because it is too costly in blood and money.
Despite the impending morass, Obama wants to build up the number of soldiers
in Afghanistan but without a clear plan his proposal is ridiculous. Unfortunately
our generals will ask for more soldiers by the end of September and he will
support them when they ask.
Obama
has already increased our troop levels by 21,000 and the total number in
Afghanistan is now 68,000. When will this end?
Obama
must produce a viable strategy and not more rhetoric like “we need to give
things more time”, “we need to train the Afghan Army so it can do the job
itself or “we need to win in the fight against our enemies”.
We
have heard that bullshit before... in Iraq and Vietnam.
