Veterans Day 2009 - Time to End
the War in Afghanistan
November 11, 2009
Obama is still mulling over his options
for the Afghan war and is supposed to decide something late this month.
There are no easy solutions because Bush and Company dithered for years and
ignored an enemy getting stronger and deadlier.
Unfortunately he will
probably add more soldiers for the war. But sending more soldiers to Afghanistan will
not help a chaotic country mired in violence and drugs.
Afghanistan is not Iraq and what we did
there will not work in Afghanistan. Tribal associations and Muslim
extremists are too strong for the West to overcome. Creating a peaceful and
pro-Western Afghanistan is impossible. They do not welcome our presence,
democracy and ways of doing things. They never will.
The Soviet Union understood that years ago
and left. Their failure meant years of war and thousands of dead. It was a
bloody lesson we must not repeat.
Most veterans would say war must be
avoided whenever possible. To honor our vets in 2009 we must listen to them.
It is time to end the war in Afghanistan and bring our soldiers home.
Let's make sure Obama remembers this part
of his 2009 Veteran's Day speech:
"Our servicemen and women have been doing right by
America for generations and, as long as I am commander in chief, America
is going to do right by them. And that is my message to all veterans
today,"
"America will not let you down. We will take care of our
own."

If Obama continues the Afghan War it will be letting them
down.
