Lt. Cmdr. Speicher
Politicized by Republicans
August 2, 2009
On Sunday, August 2nd,
the Pentagon announced they found the remains of
Lt. Cmdr. Michael
Scott Speicher, a US Navy pilot. Speicher was shot down on
January 17, 1991, the first day of the Gulf War.
Since then, Republicans have blamed
the Clinton administration for not doing enough to find him, stating they
believe he is alive and has been in captivity all this time. They bring up
unverified sightings reports by Iraqis, and purported messages from Speicher
such as his initials on a prison wall.
In 2003 after Republicans were in
control of the United States government and after we were in Iraq,
Republican Senators Robert Smith - NH and Pat Roberts - KS vowed to bring to
bring to justice, Bill Clinton and his administration for ignoring evidence
that Speicher was alive. They claimed Clinton only used the diplomatic route
to gain access to the potential crash sites and evidence thereby giving
Saddam Hussein time enough to move the pilot. They claim Clinton covered up
the pilot's capture.
Many books and articles have been
written about Speicher and they were not for the benefit of the man and his
rescue. They were for political gain and monetary benefit of a few. Don't
expect the authors and politicians to announce they were wrong and apologize
to Bill Clinton.
Republicans have again shamed
themselves but they don't care. They are now on to their Tea Parties and
joining “The Birthers” movement.
