The Bush Legacy

January 27, 2008

George Bush started his trip to the White House by declaring he was a “uniter and not a divider”. Millions believed him and from January 2001 to the present, he has divided and politically conquered his enemies from within the Republican Party and without. He has lied his way through two terms and he still has a core of supporters who see him positively. So much for morality or unity.

This year, every presidential candidate will promise to stop the corruption, provide health care, improve the economy and end the war. It won't happen because the Bush legacy is so criminally and morally corrupt that it will be decades before it is neutralized so we can move forward. It is going to be a long time.

The Bush’s legacy is:

Trillions of added national debt, more than double when he took over. It took over two centuries to accumulate 4 trillion in debt and less than eight years to double it. Certainly an amazing feat that will yoke future generations. It will anchor our economy to a mediocre level for decades.

The Iraq War was started with lies and its purpose changed to suit political goals. It will add an additional trillion dollars in debt and include thousands of dead and wounded Americans and Iraqis to the tally. The slaughter Bush started in 2003 surpasses anything Saddam Hussein did in his reign of terror over two decades. The fallout will be additional personal financial debt and human suffering.  The Iraq War represents moral bankruptcy of an incredible depth and effect.

Billions of corporate welfare entitlements were given to companies ostensibly to encourage economic growth and this has failed. These entitlements is the largest wealth transfer in history even surpassing the Reagan years. Billions went to the rich and powerful and the result has been a weak national economy with higher unemployment, simultaneous inflation and recession and more bankruptcies.

At least ten million illegal aliens have entered the country with a negative net effect on our economy. The primary beneficiaries are large corporations unwilling to pay legal residents and citizens a fair wage. They pay their illegals little, give few if any benefits and know they will not complain. This is economic slavery and it is appalling and immoral.

A failed War on Terror because it is based on political expediency and lies. Instead of cooperating with other nations to end terrorism, we use them for political purposes and then criticize them for things we do ourselves. America’s national defense is weaker for it and our citizens have fewer Constitutional protections because of it. Fear politics is a cover to steal and grab more money and political control.

The continuation and expansion of an oil based economy secures the future of only a few. Energy price hikes drag our economy down and push Americans deeper into debt. Instead of shifting to sustainable energy sources we are now further behind with little to show for it except short energy supplies and higher prices. This is a national security issue Bush is unwilling to acknowledge.

A society without basic health care for everyone. In today's America, the corporation is more important than the individual so millions have no health insurance. This is counter to the notion of our Constitutional democracy where the person is lifted up and protected. Incredibly, Iraqis have a right to health care guaranteed by America but the same thing is denied to its citizens.

Bush supporters have little negative to say because they either economically benefit from his actions or are scared and believe he will protect them from unknown threats. Bush’s legacy is a poorer nation overall, a weaker defense, a sinking economy and international vilification.

What a pitiful and immoral legacy.
