Ignore Chavez and Conserve

November 10, 2006

On November 7th, Hugo Chavez, Venezuela’s President said G.W. Bush should get the death penalty for his role in the Iraq War. This is what was reported in the Miami Herald today:

In a speech Tuesday, Chávez criticized the decision of an Iraqi court to sentence former dictator Saddam Hussein to the death penalty. ''If sentencing is to be done,'' Chávez said, ``the first one to be given the most severe sentence this planet has to offer should be the president of the United States, if we're talking about genocidal presidents.''

There is no doubt that Chavez is not a friend and his animosity and malice toward the United States and especially Bush, goes back more than a few years. For example, Chavez’s September 2006 U.N. speech was rambling and stupid. He called Bush the devil and did it so badly that it was embarrassing even to Chavez’s supporters. The only way Chavez can make a point is to exaggerate and lie.  He could have been a statesman and made his country proud but he simply and effectively validated his stupidity and malice.

For most, it is reasonable to put Saddam to death as an act of vengeance to make him pay for what he did. Though many have disagreed with the penalty, they did so on moral grounds that all life, even Saddam’s is worth preserving. This is a reason most can respect if not agree with.

Not so with Chavez, who simply objected to Saddam’s impending execution to underscore his hatred for Bush.  His latest comment shows Chavez’s low morals and warped logic.

It is difficult to ignore a man like Chavez, but let’s try.

The first step would be to stop the flow of Argentinean oil to the United States. This would be both symbolic and practical.  The oil supply cut would emphasize the need for America to conserve more and it would pressure Bush and Congress to develop alternative sources of energy within our country right now.
