 William Bennett A Racist?

October 10, 2005

William Bennett is a self proclaimed devout Christian who has written a book called "The Book of Virtues" which definitely gave him church-cred among the Christian set. Yet, he was caught gambling in Las Vegas a few years ago, loosing and winning millions and his response was that it didn’t take away from his family so it’s okay. Interesting, a million dollars could buy a lot of food, bibles and such, or even make a very nice tithe to his church. But then, his church is William Bennett.

Besides being an author, Bennett has a radio talk show called: "Morning in America" where he takes callers questions and responds to them over the air. Recently this was his response to a caller's question regarding abortion reducing crime:

"But I do know that it's true that if you wanted to reduce crime, you could, if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down,"

and then called that,

"an impossible, ridiculous and morally reprehensible thing to do, but your crime rate would go down. So these far-out, these far-reaching, extensive extrapolations are, I think, tricky."

Of course there was a reaction to his statements, especially from blacks who don't like anyone talking about aborting their babies for any reason. After all it is they who decide which black baby to abort, not some white guy. Naturally, he was called racist by black groups and liberal media. Even the Bush Administration distanced itself from him.

Bennett said his words were "mischaracterized" and claimed he was not a racist. He also said he would not apologize.

Is Bennett a racist based on his radio show statements? No, he is just another insufferable pseudo-Christian who feels superior to others, black or white.

The troubling thing is this.

Bennett is supposed to be pro-life (pro-birth really) so any thought of an abortion for any reason should be repugnant to him. Yet, we are able to see his anti-abortion stance could have exceptions, at least in his own mind. His verbal slippage shows he isn't as virtuous as he claims to be. Or superior.
