Pat Robertson Represents the Christian Right

August 23, 2005

Unfortunately for true Christians one of the spokesmen for their religion has also made them look like Muslim zealots, the very people we are at war with in Iraq and Afghanistan. On August 22nd, Pat Robertson, architect of the Christian Coalition of America declared on “The 700 Club” that it is our nation's duty to stop Hugo Chavez, the President of Venezuela from making that country a “launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism.” He then went on to say Chavez should be assassinated by a covert squad.

Reaction was swift and the Bush Administration sent Rumsfeld out to say he had not heard of any plan to murder Chavez and he was in the position to know. Besides it is forbidden to do so.

Funny how Bush did not take a stand personally. Yet he pointedly took a stand and criticized anti-war protesters but will not do so against Robertson. It is probably because both are born again Christians, who have assisted each other in the past.  Robertson certainly gave Bush millions of Christian votes in the past two elections so it wouldn't do to condemn one of your own for a Christian terrorist statement.

Robertson's career and business shenanigans go way back. He was once and probably still is, a die hard supporter of ousted Liberian president Charles Taylor who he called a good person and a “fine Christian.” He wanted Taylor to stay in power so he could make money from gold mines through a company called Freedom Gold Limited. Robertson had no problem with Taylor being a thief and  a murderer and neither did Robertson’s loyal Christian supporters.

The Church has certainly fallen to new lows with Robertson’s new remarks.

To untangle himself from this latest significant problem, Robertson will do what he has repeatedly done… he will lie. He will claim his remarks “were taken out of context”, or they were purposefully exaggerated.

Certainly every citizen has the right to say what he wants. The freedom of speech extends to everyone, except, Robertson is not just an ordinary citizen. He is a well known and wealthy pseudo Christian TV personality, with close ties with Bush and the Republican party. He is a media icon for Christianity and as such, should have been more careful about what he says. Oh well, when the Spirit moves you, how can you resist?

Maybe Christians listening to him will wonder who else does Robertson want to kill? Will it be your Governor because he supports abortion rights or you because you are a Muslim or Catholic?

Unfortunately this is of no concern to the extremist Christians Robertson represents. They like what he says and secretly cheer him on.

One day we will define terrorists to include not only Muslim extremists but also Christians one like Pat Robertson. Hopefully it won’t come too late to preserve our nation and its democracy.
