NDOT and the Taxpayer Always
Pays in Nevada
January 11, 2004
The Reno spaghetti bowl project is a long and
expensive one. In the best of circumstances, it annoys and sometimes enrages
motorists. This is normal and expected. So too are mistakes in construction.
Unfortunately a new section of freeway is substandard
and must be replaced. Now the question is, "Who will pay?" There are only
two sources of money, the "construction company" and the Nevada Department
of Transportation (NDOT) representing "The People" and our money.
As expected, the construction company feels it wasn't
their fault and blame NDOT for poor oversight and management. You didn't
catch us in the beginning so it is your fault mentality. NDOT admits it
bears some of the responsibility and cost but wants the construction company
to pay most of the bill.
The answer to this problem is simple. Our governor
will decide NDOT must pay all or most of the costs.
The facts or the truth are not needed to make such a
decision because it is always based on politics. The amount of financial
support the governor receives from businesses such as construction companies
and casinos always tips the scale. Deciding this way protects his political
butt.
The taxpayer should kick the governor's butt but he
knows that won't happen. It didn't happen before, why now?
Why does the taxpayer always have to pay? Where is our
rage?
