WMD Spin Continues
October 9, 2003
In the past day or so, National Security Adviser
Condoleezza Rice has been very vocal about Saddam Hussein and his regime.
She claims what he was doing before the war was justification for the war
but uses generalities which do not support the existence of WMDs. She claims
the following about Saddam's weapons of mass destruction:
1. There is "hard evidence" of the threat posed by Saddam.
2. Inspector David Kay found "proof of many illegal weapons programs."
3. Saddam tortured and oppressed the Iraqi people.
3. Saddam harbored ambitions to threaten the world with WMDs and he
hide the programs.
None of these statements prove there were or are WMDs in Iraq, These words
do not answer the fundamental question: Where are the WMDs Bush and his
people talked about before and after the war?
The Bush Administration talked up the WMDs as one reason for starting an
invasion of Iraq. Bush continues to say WMDs will be found. Still,
"Where are they?"
◊ Certainly Saddam was a "threat" in many ways but this is not a WMD.
◊ WMD "programs" are not WMDs.
◊ "Documents about WMDs" are not WMDs.
◊ "Threats to use WMDs" do not prove they existed or were available.
◊ "Harboring ambitions to have WMDs" does not mean he had them.
Repeatedly saying Saddam had WMDs does not make them real. You can say it a
million times and it won't be the truth.
At least the Administration cleared up one thing: Saddam
was not directly connected to 9/11. Before this, they said or implied
he was connected. So much so that most Americans believed Saddam was
directly involved in the attacks on America on 9/11.
Hopefully the Administration will clear up the WMD question with "concrete
evidence": Let's have the truth. We can handle it. But can Bush?
