North Korea --- Lets Get off the
Peninsula Altogether
March 3, 2003
As much as I hate to say it, the US needs to remove
itself from S. Korea. It is clear that citizens in both Koreas don't want us
there. I expected an anti-American attitude from the North but now that
sentiment is prevalent in the South as well, especially with those under 30.
They have learned little from their own history, and do not understand what
the US did to give them freedom.
To complicate matters, China has wanted us off the
peninsula for decades and has deliberately been of little help in defusing
the current rhetoric and posturing of the North. The North’s actions,
furthers their aim of ridding itself of a US presence.
That's Okay. Lets go and leave them to reunify and
be one big happy family.
The 37,000 or so US personnel in S Korea can be
moved out in months. They are merely trip wires, to be sent to slaughter if
a real war broke out. I don't want our citizens to be offered up as
sacrifice.
We can setup a place nearby to keep an eye on things
so we can preemptively strike should our immediate national interests are in
jeopardy. This would also help us protect Japan, which I think is still an
ally.
The South can deal with the missile testing, the
nuclear power plant restart, and the threats to withdraw from the Armistice
Agreement, which the North has broken many times. (Seizing the US warship
Pueblo in the 60s and shooting down a airliner killing everyone on board in
the 80s)
Maybe the South can give the North what it really
wants.... food, money, and fuel. A fine start toward re-unification.
Guess what... the most pitiful thing about this
whole mess is: most of Congress is unconcerned and the president refuses to
resolve this issue, once and for all.
