Casino Property Tax Reductions are Un-Fair
February 2003
Washoe county officials reduced the values of some Reno-area casinos by
about 118 million dollars. That is quite a sum. The reduction in value will
costs local governments about 11/2 million dollars. That too is quite a sum.
Casinos can do this because there is a law in Nevada that allows it if they
have declining incomes. No one can argue that most businesses have had down
turns, especially right now.
What if you are not a casino? How about a book store, or restaurant? No deal
for you!
Then how about the regular citizen who has been laid off or had to take a
salary reduction because of the poor economy? No deal for them either?
The law is un-fair and transfers the financial burdens of casinos to other
businesses and everyone who works.
How is it, that one industry can get a break like this when others can't?
I speak rhetorically of course.. we all know how it is done. Politics during
Legislative sessions. The Casino lobbyists have access that regular citizens
or business doe not have.
Comes down to money. And when you have little of none, the Legislature will
not have a deal for you!
