A Mother's Day Message
May 5, 2005
Years ago, I would try to find a mothers day card
that fit my mom but none seemed to. The syrupy messages certainly
didn't, because she wasn't warm and cuddly and the humorous ones I
thought, would have been lost on her. At some point I believed nothing
really fit, so why try? So I just got any card and wrote, "Love, Jim"
though I didn't mean it.
This went on for years until 1998. You see, Mom died
in July 1997 and Mothers Day in 1998 was the first one without her. It
was a shock and started me thinking about what I should have said and
what I wanted to say to her.
Since then, I realized Moms don't have to be great,
beautiful, or rich. They don't have to be cuddly, smart, supportive or
whatever... they are what they are, a woman who carried you inside
her, then raised you as best she could with what she had. Moms
deserve respect and recognition for that and no less than that.
Since 1998, I have appreciated and understood my Mom
more and more. My notions and perspectives have changed... it's called
growing up. I regret not having the maturity to say what I needed to
say when she was alive. Don't be me.
So, as a child of a mom, let her know how you feel
about her. It could start by telling her you appreciate her ultimate
gift ..... your life.
You won't regret it.
Jim
PS: For those without moms like me, just think about
her ... she will understand. At least I'd like to think so.
